Collection: Xindi Hu
Xindi Hu, a UAL Camberwell student, explores the heroine's journey through an ecofeminist fantasy lens. She transforms temporal narratives with unconscious symbols from myths, envisioning a mirror-like descent into unseen geological underworlds. Her work reflects the hopes and fears of these subterranean realms, metaphorically sinking to the planet's core alongside lost civilizations in a "kiss of death." Utilizing the underground as a primary backdrop, Hu integrates supernatural encounters shaped by magical realism and reformed architectural spaces, creating chaotic compositions that mimic Earth's surface. These visuals are enriched with female figures and feminine imagery, inspired by nature observations, elder tales, and research into Chinese minority nature worship.
Hu's multidisciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and ceramics. Her paintings feature soft brushstrokes and layered oil, creating vibrant realms that invite viewers to explore archetypes. She also experiments by crafting "portal spaces" within ceramic frames for watercolor paintings, using transparent colors and dense lines.
